Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the high purity titled compound useufl as amber perfumes, easily, in high yield, by cyclization of dihydro-γ-ionone-dialkyl- or -alkylene-acetal, which is an inexpensive and easily avaiable, novel compound, with an acid in the presence of water.
CONSTITUTION: New dihydro-γ-ionone-dialkyl- or -alkylene-acetal of formula I [R1 and R2 are methyl, ethyl, or together form -(CH2)2-] is cyclized with an acid in the presence of water, to give α-ambrinol of formula II. The condensation of inexpensive and easily avaiable methyl vinyl ketone-dialkyl- or -alkylene-acetal and 3,3-dimethyl-1-trimethyl siloxy-1-cyclohexene gives a new compound of formula III, which is made to react with triphenylsulfonium methylide to form the starting material or formula I. The compounds of formula I and formula III are useful as a lasting agent for imparting or modifying aroma and flavor.
