Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect, and determine the quantity of, carboxylic acids simply and accurately at a low cost, by treating the carboxylic acids with a specific compound in an aqueous solution, and subjecting the carboxylic acids to measurement utilizing a color reaction.
CONSTITUTION: A sample containing carboxylic acids to be subjected to qualitative and quantitative analysis and o-nitro-phenylhydrazine are treated with a water- soluble carbodiimide compond in an aqueous solution to convert the acids contained in the sample into a coversponding o-nitrophenylhydrazide. The resulting o-nitro- phenylhydrazide is subjected to measurement utilizing a color reaction in an alkaline medium. Water-soluble carbodiimide compounds used in the above-mentioned treatment include, for example, 1-cyclohexyl-3-( 2-morpholinoethyl )-carbodiimide p- toluenesulfonate, or 1-ethyl-3-( 3'-dimethylaminopropyl )-carbodiamide hydrochloride.
