Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily obtain titled polymer suitable as a material for contact lenses, by polymerizing a hydrophobic monomer together with nylon fibers and then mechanically removing the nylon fibers from the polymerized mass.
CONSTITUTION: A suitable number of nylon fibers 3 are stretched tight between vertically opposed metallic supports 1 and 2 to form a tight-stretched body 5. This body 5 is placed in a vessel 4. A hydrophobic monomer, e.g., methyl methacrylate, is introduced into this vessel, and then polymerized therein to form a solid mass. Next, after withdrawl from the vessel 4, this solid mass of the polymer of the hydrophobic monomer is cut and ground into a half-finished product with a desired shape, e.g., cylinder, ring or contact lens shape by using, for example, a lathe. Next, the polymer having fine through-holes of the purpose is obtained by pulling out the nylon fibers 3 from the half-finished product 9 by using, for example, a fixture such as pincers or a drawbench.
