Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable unifrom heating by facilitating beginning and starting and of melting, reducing the consumption of the electrode and increasing the electric input, in an electric furnace for melt processing burnt ashes and the like.
CONSTITUTION: A vessel 1 made of a refractory material has electrodes 3, 4 and 3', 4' mutually parallel and forming pairs. Each of electrodes can be shifted horizontally. At the time of starting (a), electrodes 3 and 4 are in an approaching state. The electrodes 3 and 3' and 4 and 4' are applied with a voltage of the same polarity to generate an arc. Ashes in the vicinity of the arc fall in a melting state and become conductive. After a material is accumulated in a certain degree, when the polarity of the electrode 3 is changed over from positive to negative and the electrode 4 from negative to positive, as shown in (b), a current flows in a wide range as shown by arrows 5 and 5' and ashes within the vessel is uniformly heated by direct current flow heating. Similar operational effects can be achieved by changing the polarity as shown in (c).
