Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a Cr2O3-Al2O3 type combined oxide having improved properties as a ceramic material, by adding an acid to a chromic acid-containing alumina hydrate, calcining the blend, leaching it out with water, and drying.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of Na2CrO4 by blending Cr ore with soda ash, etc. and calcining the blend, Al2O3 in the Cr ore is extracted as NaAlO3 together with Na2CrO4. The solution is neutralized and alumina material is precipitated as Na2CrO4-containing alumina hydrate, and removed from the Na2CrO4 solution. An acid, e.g., sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc. is added to this alumina hydrate prepared as a by-product and CrO3 is formed from Na2CrO4 contained in it, to give alumina hydrate containing CrO3. This compound is calcined at ≥400°C so that CrO3 is decomposed into Cr2O3, and alumina hydrate is converted into Al2O3. The calcined product is washed with water, water-soluble salts are eluted, and it is dried to prepare a Cr2O3-Al2O3 type refractory.
