Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare high purity TaC or NbC from impure Ta or Nb metal or its compound, by melting a mixture of the raw material, carbon, and Al and/or Fe, and treating with an acid after cooling.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material composed of Ta metal, Nb metal or its compound containing a large amount of impurity, is mixed with carbon powder and Al and/or Fe. The weight ratio of (Al+Fe)/(the pure part of Ta or Nb) is pref. about 0.5W 2. The mixture is molten in an inert atmosphere at about 1,900W2,100°C. After cooling, the mixture is washed with an inorganic acid (other than hydrofluoric acid) diluted with the same amount of water at about 50W60°C to dissolve and remove Al, Fe and other impurities leaving the high purity TaC or NbC.
