Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a carbon material having sufficient isotropy in relatively simple processes by cooling a kneaded material of aggregate coke pulverized to a predetermined particle size or less and binder pitch followed by pulverization, isotropic press forming and calcination.
CONSTITUTION: Petroleum coke, coal coke or other aggregate coke obtd. by carbonizing heavy oil is pulverized to ≤100, especially ≤200 mesh. This pulverized coke is kneaded with binder pitch at the softening point of the pitch +30W60°C for 30W60min. The pitch preferably has 80W100°C softening point and contains 50W60wt% fixed carbon. The kneaded material is then cooled usually to room temp. and pulverized to ≤20, especially ≤60 mesh. The resulting granular bound body is subjected to isotropic press forming and calcination to manufacture a desired isotropic carbon material. The press forming is carried out at the softening point of the pitch +0W10°C under 400W2,000kg/cm2 pressure, generally at 800W 1,300°C.
