Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a uniform bead polymer free from fine powder, by suspension- polymerizing, in a W/O system, acrylamide with the aid of a dispersing agent which is a combination of a sorbitan ester type nonionic surfactant and ethyl cellulose.
CONSTITUTION: In a process for suspension-polymerizing, in a W/O system, acrylamide alone or a monomer mixture consisting of acrylamide and at most 50mol% neutralized salt of a dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylate and/or a quaternized monomer in the presence of a catalyst and a hydrocarbon dispersing medium/water/dispersant mixture; there is employed as said dispersant a combination of 0.03W 1.0wt%, based on monomer, a sorbitan ester type nonionic surfactant and 0.1W 3.0wt%, based on monomer, ethyl cellulose. With respect to the amount of the surfactant, too small an amount does not give a bead polymer whereas too large an amount causes the formation of fine powder.
