Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the titled fibrous material for composite material of novel three-layer structure capable of being formed at low temperature and low pressure by a method wherein a layer consisting of Si or Cu and an Al-Mg alloy layer are provided on a core component of highly elastic carbon fiber.
CONSTITUTION: A fiber bundle consisting of about 1,000W24,000 single fibers and having a modulus of elasticity of not lower than about 30t/mm2 and usually having a diameter of about 6W10μm is prepared, for instance, by firing polyacrylonitrile or the like. On the surface of the first layer consisting of the core component comprised of the fiber bundle, a coat layer consisting of Si or Cu is formed as the second layer by ion plating or the like, and then a coat layer consisting of the Al- Mg alloy is formed as the third layer on the second layer by an appropriate method. Alternatively, the second layer and the third layer are formed in the reveresed order. In this case, the volume content of the core layer is 10W80%, the thickness of the Si or Cu layer is about 0.02W0.5μ and that of the Al-Mg alloy layer is about 0.5W5.0μ.
