Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable the molten metal level in a mold to be detected highly accurately over a long period of time by providing holes on the counter casting face side of the mold, inserting thermocouples for detecting molten metal levels which are insulated at parts other than the tip parts into these holes, abutting the tips to the end faces of the holes and arc welding the same. CONSTITUTION:Holes H are provided on the counter casting face side IM of the side wall M1 of a mold M for continuous casting. The parts of thermocouples S for detecting molten metal levels other than the tip parts S2 of the in-hole inertion parts S1 are coated with an insulator C and these thermocouples S are inserted into the holes H. The tip part S2 of each thermocouple S is abutted on the end face H1 of each hole H under prescribed pressure and in this state, the tip parts S2 of the thermocouple S is arc-welded to the end face H1 of the hole H. Thereby, the tip part S2 of the Cu-Ni alloy bar for the thermocouple S is surely melt-stuck to the end face H1 in the hole H of the side wall M1 of the copper-made mold. The alloy layer SM in the melt-stuck part is formed to a uniform thickness of about <=0.2mm., and this makes the thermal sensitivity of the thermocouples S superior.
