Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a low-cost and high-performance length measuring device by disposing a scale of which one surface is recorded with magnetic signals in the form of repetition of magnetization in the length measuring direction and the other surface is formed with a magnetic medium magnetized in the direction rectangular to this and MR elements.
CONSTITUTION: A magnetic medium 9 recorded with magnetic signals in the form of repetition of magnetization 10 of a bit length P along the length measuring direction (x direction) is formed on one surface of a scale block 8 of a rectangular parallelepiped shape. A magnetic recording medium 11 magnetized in the (y) direction at a prescribed width L over the length measuring section is formed on the back side thereof. Four MR sensors 16W19 are provided in parallel by way of a space D at the interval of P/4. The MR elements 16W19 are applied with the bias magnetic field 15 from the magnetization 12 in the (y) direction in the medium 11 roughly in a longitudinal direction other than the signal magnetic field 14 applied in the width direction and are thereby reduced of anisotropic diffusion and therefore the length measuring device is made low in cost and high in performance.
