Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover an iron component contained in dust and scale discharged in the manufacture of a billet by operation in an arc type electric furnace and to effectively utilize the component as part of starting material for an iron source for the furnace by kneading the dust and scale with carbon fine powder, granulating the kneaded material, and heat treating the granules to recover the contained iron component.
CONSTITUTION: Dust discharged together with waste gas in the manufacture of a billet in an arc type electric furnace and iron oxide-rich scale discharged in the manufacture of the billet are kneaded with carbon fine powder such as dust coal or coke breeze and granulated. The granules are heat treated at about 700°C to convert the contained iron component into iron oxide or iron by the reaction Fe2O3+C→ 2FeO+CO or Fe2O3+3C→2Fe+2CO. The heat treated product is charged into the electric furnace together with scraps as an iron source for the furnace. Thus, the iron component is recovered.
