CONSTITUTION:A taper 6 is formed in the drum end of the upper work roll 2; a taper 8 fittable to the taper 6 is formed in the inner surface of as elastic ring 7 which is then fitted into the drum end of the upper work roll 2; and the ring 7 is fixed to the upper work roll 2 by a fixer 9 so as to be immovable in the direction of the roll axis. Before starting the rolling pass, the roll gap of upper and lower work rolls 2, 3 is preset; under this condition, a load is previously applied to the upper and lower work rolls 2, 3 by the effect of reaction against an elastic deformation of the elastic ring 7.
