PURPOSE:To perform air-to-fuel ratio feedback control or open loop control, and to obtain excellent operating performance, by providing the means which detects indirectly the temperature of the oxygen sensor from the resistance of the oxygen sensor heater. CONSTITUTION:The oxygen sensor heater 13 consisting of the sensor temperature rise platinum wire heater is provided between the upper aluminum base 11 and the lower aluminum 12, and the reference oxygen electrode 14, solid electrolyte 15, discharge gas side platinum electrode 16 as the oxygen sensor main body are constituted in layer on the upper part of the upper aluminum base 11. Further, the resistance value of the oxygen heater 13 at the cold start is detected and when the oxygen sensor reaches a high temperature sufficiently to be operated, the open loop control of air-to-fuel ratio is released and the air-to-fuel ratio control of the closed loop can be started.
