Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain good char capable of giving coke having a high strength and activity even on using as a raw material for molded coke in large quantities, by heat-treating a highly volatile noncoking coal under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A highly volatile non-coking coal pulverized to a grain size, 80% or more of which passes through a -3mm screen, is heated from room temperature to 250W350°C, dried and preheated. The coal is then heated to 600°C or below at a heating rate ≤15°C/min slowly and decomposed thermally to give a char, which is then cooled to room temperature to 50°C. The drying and preheating treatment provides uniform slow dry distillation treatment, and the thermal decomposition at 600°C or below permits the residual volatile contents to remain a little and prevents the deterioration of an AP index. The excessive heating rate deteriorates the coke strength, and the heating rate is preferably 2W8°C/min.
