Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a stabilizer for an organic compound at a low cost in high yield, by reacting an alcohol with a metallic hydroxide, and reacting a specific phenol with an ester in the presence of the resultant catalytic system which is substantially anhydrous.
CONSTITUTION: A 1W8C aliphatic alcohol or alicyclic alcohol in excess is previously reacted with an alkali metallic or alkaline earth metalic hydroxide, and the formed water is removed to make the system substantially anhydrous. In the resultant catalytic system, a compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H or 1W8C alkyl) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R3 and R4 are H or alkyl; R5 is 1W20C alkyl) to give a phenol of formula III. The compound of formula III is useful as a stabilizer for many organic compounds, e.g. lubricating oil, fuel oil, soap or rubber.
