PURPOSE:To obtain a compact lens system of excellent variable magnification effect by interchanging the 2nd lens group with a lens group of divergent effect of a different refracting power with respect to the movable 1st lens group of a lens system consisting of lens groups of convergent effect, divergent effect and convergent effect successively from the object side. CONSTITUTION:In the lens system of the 3-group constitution consisting of the 1st lens group 1 of convergent effect, the 2nd lens group 2-1 of divergent effect and the 3rd lens group 3 of convergent effect, successively from the object side, the 2nd lens group 2-1 is exchanged with the lens group 2-3 of divergent effect of a different refracting power; at the same time, the 1st lens group 1 is moved on the optical axis, whereby the magnification is varied while the position of the image plane is being maintained constant. Thereby, the lens system of the compact constitution which is superior in variable magnification effect and is well corrected of aberrations is obtained.
