Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve sealing performance and durability of a mechanical seal, by applying porous chrome plating over one of the sliding surfaces of the mechanical seal and making the other with a carbon material.
CONSTITUTION: In a mechanical seal 30 shown in the drawing, a rotatable ring (rotary piece) 38 is made of a carbon material, and porous chrome plating 40 is applied over the surface of a sheet ring (fixed piece) 31 onto which the ring 38 is urged by the resilient force of a spring 36. With such an arrangement, it is enabled to lower the friction factor on the contact surface and also to reduce their specific wear remarkably. Therefore, in a mechanical seal 30 for use, for instance, in a swash plate type compressor in which rotation is continued with supply of a small amount of or no lubricating oil, the amount of leakage oil can be reduced to less than one half of that in the conventional arrangements. Further, leakage of oil during long use can be also lessened and durability of the seal can be improved if they are compared with those of a seal consisting of a combination of a high-hardness layer and a carbon material.
