Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance advantageously from a phenol and a ketone in the presence of a highly active catalyst which does not consume a sulfonic acid group produced by the acylation of a crosslinked copolymer having a sulfonic group and a hydroxymethyl group with a mercaptocarboxylic acid, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A crosslinked copolymer having a sulfonic acid group and a hydroxymethyl group, e.g. crosslinked polystyrene having a sulfonic acid group in the benzene nucleus, preferably styrene having a sulfonic acid group in the benzene nucleus, preferably styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer, is acylated with a mercaptocarboxylic acid or its dithoiketal, or their reactive derivative until hydroxymethyl groups in the number corresponding to 5% or more sulfonic acid groups in the crosslinked copolymer are acylated. A phenol is reacted with a ketone in a molar ratio of 3:1W20:1, at 50W150°C in the presence of the resultant solid catalyst.
