PURPOSE:To enable to obtain the playback video signal having high quality without increasing the mechanical precision of the device, by electrically compensating the decrease in the envelope of playback video signal and production of noise caused at still picture and double speed playback. CONSTITUTION:The video signal playback means consists of two rotating magnetic heads A, B running in a prescribed speed and FM detection circuit 15, and the magnetic tape storing video signal is run in the speed less than twice the prescribed speed to playback the video signal. The video signal from the detection circuit 15 is fed to the one field memory circuit 16, it is stored in one vertical scanning period and introduced with a delay of one vertical scanning period. Further, the output from the heads A, B is fed to the envelope decrease detection circuit 17 to output the detection pulse P1 when the envelope decreases less than a prescribed level. Normally, the output of the memory 16 is output at the output terminal 19 via the switch circuit 18 so that the video signal removing the decrease in the envelope can continuously be output by switching the circuit 18 when the pulse P1 is output.
