Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize the operation of an engine by providing the main body of the engine with a sensor to detect its vibrations for restarting operations of intermission-side cylinders forcibly on the basis of an output signal of the vibration sensor when the vibration level of the main body of the engine surpasses a fixed value.
CONSTITUTION: In a cylinder-number controlled engine which stops operations of cylinders partly for a light load, a vibration sensor 14 is provided on the side part of an engine main body 13 to be connected to a control circuit 12. Besides, an exhaust- gas returning valve 9 is provided on an exhaust-gas returning passage 8 in the downstream of an interception valve 6. When vibrations of the engine main body 13 is increased over a fixed level to make the operation of the engine unstable, the control circuit 12 opens the interception valve 6, and on the other hand, controls the exhaust-gas returning valve 9 to close for changing the operation of partial cylinders into that of all cylinders forcibly. This construction permits to stabilize the operation of the engine and check the increasing of its vibration level.
