Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a catalyzer from being damaged by burning by installing an auxiliary combustion device at the upstream side of an oxidized catalyzer in an exhaust system, and operating it according to the output of an exhaust sensor. CONSTITUTION:An auxiliary combustion device 12 provided with a heater 15 is installed at the more upstream side than an oxidized catalyzer 18 in an exhaust pipe 16. An auxiliary intake pipe 13 is connected to this auxiliary combustion device 12 via a control valve 14. Output of an oxygen content detecting sensor 19 is inputted into a controller 20, and when oxygen content in the exhaust exceeds a specified value, the auxilairy combustion device 12 is operated and an unburnt component is afterfired. With this constitution, any burning loss in the catalyzer 18 is prevented from occurring.
