Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent a seizure between a seal material and a seal groove of a rotor made of its basic material consisting of titanium or titanium alloy, by forming an oxygen diffusion hardened layer of more than 20μ thickness in the outer layer of said seal groove.
CONSTITUTION: Sealing is effected between a rotor 11 and a rotor housing 14 by inserting cast iron sealing material 13 into a seal groove 12 which is formed on the top of the rotor 11 with its basic material consisting of titanium or titanium alloy. Further, sealing is effected between the rotor 11 and a side housing 17 by inserting cast iron sealing material 16, corner seal 21 and oil seal 22 respectively into seal groove 15a, 15b and 15c which are formed on the side of the rotor 11. After the rotor 11 is kept for about five hours at the regular temperature in a high temperature oxidation atmosphere furnace including argon gas mixed with about 1% air, a titanium oxide layer is formed on the outermost surface of said rotor 11, while an oxygen diffusion hardened layer of more than 20μ thickness is formed in the surface layer of said rotor.
