Abstract

PURPOSE: To save forging process and apply hot working under lessened energy by hot rolling the powder high speed steel sintered compactly by an HIP method by specifying the relations among rolling ratios, temperatures, and reduction of area.
CONSTITUTION: High speed steel power is HIP treated, whereby a compactly sintered body is obtained. This powder high speed steel billet is hot rolled without forging. This hot rolling is accomplished at 5W50% reduction of area per pass at 1,000W1,200°C in a region of ≤4 rolling ratios and at 10W75% reduction of area per pass at ≥800°C in a region of ≤4 rolling ratios. This method saves forging prior to forging by performing rolling under gentle rolling conditions up to 4 rolling ratio at which there is no more segregation of deposit to grain boundary and performs working to a required size by the hot rolling alone. Hence, the reduction in cost and the considerable improvement in productivity are achieved.
