Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled decolored compound, useful as a raw material for an epoxy resin not colored even in an oxidizing atmosphere for a long time readily, by heat-treating colored dihydroxydiphenylmethane solution at a low temperature with sodium boron hydride and oxalic acid.
CONSTITUTION: A solution of colored dihydroxydiphenylmethane (A) in an organic solvent, e.g. epichlorophdrin or benzene, is heated 0W150°C, preferably 0W100°C, in the presence of sodium boron hydride in an amount of 0.001W1wt% based on (A) and oxalic acid in an amount of 1.5 times that of the sodium boron hydride as an anhydride by weight, usually for 1W2hr, to give decolored dihydroxydiphenylmethane.
