PURPOSE:To extract the optimum edge part according to the state of a picture, by multiplying the absolute value of the difference between the concentration level of the noticed picture element and the concentration level of the adjacent picture element by the concentration level of the noticed picture element and then giving a comparison and decision between the result of the said multiplication and the threshold level set previously. CONSTITUTION:The picture information given from a scanner and every picture element is stored collectively at the input buffer part consisting of the 1-bit shift register 1 plus 1-line shift registers 2 and 3. The concentration level signals QX, QB and QG of the noticed picture element X and its peripheral picture elements B and G each are extracted in parallel out of the registers 1-3 and then combined properly to obtain the absolute value of the concentration level difference between the signal QX and the signals QB and QG through the 1st arithmetic circuit 4, 2nd arithmetic circuit 5 and 3rd arithmetic circuit 6 each. Then the level difference is multiplied by the concentration level of the picture element X. The result of this operation is applied to the level detector 7 to be compared with the threshold level set previously. Thus the optimum edge part can be extracted.
