Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform electrolytic reaction of a high yield stable for a long period of time by providing a circulating means of circulating the dimerized material formed in the cathode chamber of an electrolytic cell together with water to an extracting device and extracting the same with an org. solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An anode chamber 3 and a cathode chamber 2 are provided with at least one sheet of a diaphragm 4 in an electrolytic cell 1. Water and an org. solvent which is immiscible with water and dissolves a dimer are charged into an extraction tank 9, and a predetermined amount of 1,2-dimethyl-pyridinium salt is dissolved in water phase 11. Water-base cathode electrolyte is fed into the cathode chamber 2 via a passage 7 by a circulating means 8. While electrolysis is being carried out, the continuously discharged electrolyte is returned via a passage 7' into the extraction tank 9. The 1,1', 2,2'-tetrahydro-4,4'-bipyridine produced by the electrolysis is extracted with solvent phase 10, and the water phase is again circulated to the electrolytic cell 1. The rate of passage is kept at least at about ≥0.1m/sec under current supply of about 0.1W20A/dm2. An organic solvent having about 0.1W5% solubilities to water is used.
