Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain methacrylic acid, by the extraction of an aqueous methacrylic acid containing acetic acid with ethylbenzene and/or xylene, and the elimination of a small amount of acetic acid and water contained through the azeotrope with the extracting solvent mentioned above while recycling the distillate.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous methacrylic acid containing acetic acid prepared through the oxidation of isobutylene, t-butanol, etc., is fed from a tube 1 to an extracting tower 2, and an extracting solvent, e.g. ethylbenzene and/or xylene, containing a small amount of acetic acid, is fed from a tube 10. The organic layer containing methacrylic acid, the extracting solvent and a very small amount of acetic acid, is fed from the top of the tower 2 through a tube 3 to an acetic acid removing tower 5 and distilled by the vacuum distillation to distill off a part of the solvent, acetic acid and water from the top of the tower 5. The resultant distillate is refluxed partly. The remaining distillate and the solvent recovered from the latter stage are fed into a tank 9, and recycled from the tube 10 to the extracting tower 2. Water containing acetic acid is obtained from the bottom of the extracting tower 2.
