Abstract

PURPOSE: To form colored coating of a novel color tone excellent in quality and performance, by performing the anodic oxidation of Al in a bath contg. essentially N compound, and contg. acid or its salt, then by electrolytic pigmentation of the Al in a coloring bath contg. essentially metallic salt or acid etc.
CONSTITUTION: A bath consisting essentially of N compound (e.g. sulfamic acid, ammonium sulfate etc.), to which is added inorg. acid such as sulfuric acid or org. acid such as oxalic acid, or the salts of these acids, is prepared. Al or Al alloy is anodic oxidized in the bath by using DC, or by simultaneous use of DC and AC, or by use of wave formed current having the same effect as those of said electric currents. The anodic oxide coating of said Al is subjected to publicly konwn electrolytic coloring, i.e., said Al is subjected to AC electrolysis or DC cathodic electrolysis in a coloring bath contg. salt of metal such as Ni, Co etc. or acid to form colored coating of novel color tone on said anodic oxide coating. The colored coating hereby obtained is excellent in throwing power and has excellent appearance performance without producing breakage phenomenon of coating or without deposition of metal or metallic compound on the surface.
