Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable character directions to be discriminated automatically by making out a mask for the characters in the object to be read, and counting and comparing the horizontal peripheral length and vertical peripheral length of said mask. CONSTITUTION:When postal matter opposes to the read part of character directions, said postal matter is read and scanned by said read part, and the output thereof is supplied to a character mask making circuit 24 via an information compressing circuit 21, a horizontal projection mask making circuit 22, and a vertical projecting mask making circuit 23. The circuits 22-23 make a mask for the characters on the postal matter. The character mask thus made is counted of its horizontal peripheral length and vertical peripheral length, respectively, in a horizontal peripheral length counter circuit 25 and a vertical peripheral length counter circuit 26. The count results of these circuits 25, 26 are compared in a comparator 27. The circuit 27 discriminates that the recording direction of the postal code is lateral writing in a vertical position when the output of the circuit 25 is larger than that of the circuit 26. On the other hand, if the output of the circuit 26 is larger than that of the circuit 25, it discriminates that the writing direction is vertical writing in a horizontal position.
