PURPOSE:To easily discriminate a numeral, by operating a result of counting of a variation point in a prescribed direction,and the total bit number of a character pattern, and deciding either a numeral or not in accordance with a result of said operation. CONSTITUTION:Each bit signal of a pattern memory 11 is fetched in order in the horizontal direction and is supplied to a shift register 13. When the n-th and n-1- th bits of the shift register 13 have become ''1'' and ''0'' signals, an AND circuit 14 is formed, and a counter 19 is counted up by the output. On the contrary, when said signals have becomes ''0'' and ''1'', respectively, an AND circuit 17 is formed and is counted up. As a result, the nmber of variation points in the horizontal direction in a character pattern of the pattern memory 11 is counted in the counter 19. Also, each bit signal of the pattern memory 11 is fetched in order in the vertical direction and is supplied to a shift register 21.
