Abstract
PURPOSE: To make possible the measurement of sheath thickness even if there were crooking, vibration, etc. in the cable by transmitting and receiving ultrasonic waves while moving an ultrasonic wave transmitter-receiver in the direction crossing the cable running path.
CONSTITUTION: A horizontal guide 6 is provided above a cooling tank 2 in parallel with the water surface 3a of cooling water and perpendicularly to the running direction of a cable 1, and an ultrasonic wave transmitter-receiver 4 is supported slidably by way of a slide 7 in the long hole 6a of the horizontal guide 6 in the direction crossing the cable. While the time intervals of the pulselike energizing of the transmitter-receiver 4 by a measuring device body 5 are being taken sufficiently smaller as compared to the fixed distance moving time of the transmitter-receiver 4, the emission of pulselike ultrasonic waves and the detection of reflected waves are repeate while the transmitter-receiver 4 is being reciprocated in the direction crossing the cable. Then, it always occurs that the emission of the ultrasonic waves is accomplished within the perpendicular plane passing the axial line of the cable, thus even if there were crooking, vibration, etc. in the cable 1, the measurement of its sheath thickness is made possible.
