Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the danger caused by hydrogen generation, by controlling the relation between the number of unit electrolytic cells which are to be connected in series and the voltage to be applied in a prescribed range.
CONSTITUTION: Air contained in a chamber 8 is introduced by a blower 10 into an airtight vessel 9 which accomodates unit electrolytic cells 1, 1', and it is then circulated. While the air being circulated, DC power is supplied from a DC power source 11 to the unit cells 1, 1' so that oxygen in the system is consumed. The oxygen generated at the anodes 3 is released through an outlet 12 to the uutside of the system, thereby removing oxygen contained in the chamber 8. The apparatus thus composed is operated at an applied voltage Vn volts shown by the following formula: an <Vn<a(n-1)+b, where a: 0.4W0.65, b: 1.45W1.75, n: the number of unit electrolytic cells.
