Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a xanthine derivative useful as a drug of a circulating organ capable of improving sequela of cerebral thrombosis, by reacting a 1-alkyl-4-methylamino-5-N-methylcarboxamido-imidazole with a urea derivative.
CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by the formula I (R is lower alkyl) is reacted with a urea derivative shown by the formula II (R' is lower alkyl; n is 2W5) to give a xanthine derivative shown by the formula III. The reaction is carried out in the absence of a solvent, preferably heated at 140W160°C, but a solvent having no part in reaction may be used. Depending upon compounds used, the reaction time is 1W48 hours sufficiently.
EFFECT: Theobromine is not used as a starting material.
USE: 1-(5-Oxohexyl)-3, 7-dimethylxanthine, a typical one of the compound shown by the formula III is especially useful as a drug for a circulating organ.
