Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an end face of excellent mirror surface without spoiling the optical charactlristics, by removing the polymer clad layer of polymer clad optical fiber, forming a silver film on the surface of exposed fiber core, securing, cutting, and polishing the cut surface. CONSTITUTION:A clad layer 2 and a sheath 3 which surround a fiber core 1 of a polymer clad optical fiber are removed mechanically and chemically, and a silver film 4 which is dense, high in hardness and excellent in adhesion is uniformly formed on the core 1 by brushing or other method. This core is secured to a metal or glass sleeve 5 with fixing agent (epoxy resin or the like) 6, and is further secured with a fixing member 7 having a similar hardness as the corl 1, and is then cut along line A-A together with the member 7. Thus produced end face is finished to mirror surface. Since it is secured with the silver film 4 of high hardness, the end face is free from loss or deviation, and the light is reflected by the silver film 4 not leaking to outside, so that splicing of optical fibers or splicing of optoelectrical transducers may be achieved excellently.
