Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve the perfect separation of chlorine gas and caustic alkali and the simplification of operation control by continuously integrating the top and bottom of the respective anode chambers in the salt water electrolytic cell which is partitioned to plural sets of anode chambers and cathode chambers by cationic exchange membranes. CONSTITUTION:If saturated salt water is supplied through feed port 1 into the electrolytic cell in which the tops 7 and bottoms 6 of the anode chambers 9 partioned by cationic exchange membranes are continuously integrated, then the thin salt water containing the chlorine gas evolved by anodes reaches the vapor-liquid interface 4 while moving upward. Since the vapor-liquid interface is larger than the sectional area of each anode chamber, the chlorine gas is separated without stagnating in the anode chambers and is extracted through exhaust port 3. On the other hand, the thin salt water flows out through extraction port 2 and the aqueous caustic alkali solution and hydrogen gas produced in the cathode chambers 8 are extracted through extraction port 11 and exhaust port 12, respectively.
