Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain isobutylene in the liquid phase at an increased dehydration rate, by heating an aqueous solution of tert-butanol containing a hydration catalyst in the presence of an acidic substance having a dehydrating activity at a plate above the feed one of the butanol of a distillation column under reflux.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing a non-volatile soluble hydration catalyst and tert-butanol is fed from the line 2 of the distillation column / comprising a rectifying section above the line 2. The column / is heated by the reboiler 7 so that the top temperature may be 70°C or above and the butanol is dehydrated at or below the feed plate. Part of the bottoms containing the catalyst and butanol in a low concentration are fed from the line 6 near the top to make the dehydration proceed even above the line 2. The top vapor is condensed in the condenser 3 to remove the uncondenable isobutylene 5 from the system.
