Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve mechanical strength and the wetting of synthetic resin unwoven cloth in electrolyte by separating the cloth whose only the fiber surface layer is graft-polymerized. CONSTITUTION:The unwoven cloth which consists of the synthetic resin fiber 1 such as polyorefin systems and whose fiber surface layer 2 only is graft-polymerized is used as the separator of a sealed type nickel-cadmium battery. And ionized radiation rays are irradiated on the unwoven cloth consisting of trunk polymer and the unwoven cloth is made contact with the monomer solution which becomes the branch polymer with hydrophilic groups to graft-polymerize. For example, by using monomers such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, styrenesulfonne acid, it is suitable that the solvent which gives synthetic resin the property of swelling is contained in these monomer solution. This improves the wetting of electrolyte and permits the unwoven cloth hydrophilic groups to be obtained. As a result, high strength separators can be obtained without causing shortcircuiting.
