Abstract

PURPOSE: To achieve the reduction in thickness by making use of the polarization characteristic of the spins of magnetic material.
CONSTITUTION: Lenses 9 are disposed to the top and bottom of a transparent insulation material 10 by way of magnetic thin films 7, 7' provided with transparent conductive films 8 on the top and bottom. If with this arrangement the spins of the magnetic thin films 7, 7' are beforehand arrayed perpendicularly, light does not transmit therethrough and if an electric field is applied thereto, the magnetic field generated disturbs the spins and the polarization characteristic by the spins is lost, thus light transmits therethrough. As compared to the one using liquid crystals and polarizing plates and the one using electrochromics, the thinner thickness is made possible. Here, it is also possible to create contrast by beforehand aligning the spins of the magnetic thin films 7, 7' in the same direction and disturbing the spins by applying an electric field.
