NEW MATERIAL:1-β-D-Arabinofuranosyl-5-vinyluracil of formula I.
USE: Antiviral agent: it has antiviral activity, but weak activity of suppressing cellular propagation.
PREPARATION: 1-β-D-Aabinofuranosyl-5-hydroxymethyluracil of formula II is made to react with a hydrogen halide preferably in a reaction solvent as ether to form 5-halogenomethyl derivative. A phosphine derivative is made to act on the product to give a phosphonium salt of formula III (R is the residue of phosphonium salt), which is made to react with formaldehyde in the presence of a strong alkali to prepare the objective compound of formula I.
