Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert carburizable gas to non-carburizable gas and suppress the carburization phenomenon to casting surface by letting nickel oxide particles exist in the mold which evolve carburizable gas at the casting.
CONSTITUTION: Carburizable gas such as CO and CH4 evolved at the producing of low carbo castings by using vacuum-casting molds, extinction-resin-pattern type insert casting molds, etc. is converted to CO2 (non-carburizing gas) by nickel oxide, whereby carburization phenomenon is prevented. More specifically, the nickel oxide particles of grain sizes about 75W200μ are dispersed about 1W15% in the main mold and/or core of the mold to form the mold which is then used for casting.
