Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a protective film stable to alkali and weak acid on the surface of glass fiber lacking in alkali resistance by surface-treating the fiber with an aq. soln. contg. an inorg. cpd. such as zinc salt and a metal silicofluoride.
CONSTITUTION: To water are added 50W90wt% of one or more kinds of inorg. cpds. such as zinc salt and lead salt and 10W50wt% of a metal silicofluoride such as sodium silicofluoride or magnesium silicofluoride, preparing an acidic aq. soln. By dipping, spraying or other method this soln. is applied to glass filament or staple fiber lacking in alkali resistance or glass filament or staple fiber of low alkali resistance, e.g. G-glass fiber obtd. by bending 25wt% or less or ZrO2 into galss fiber lacking in alkali resistance. By this surface treatment a protective film with alkali resistance is formed on the glass fiber surface to provide properties such as weather resistance, water resistance, acid resistance and softness besides alkali resistance to the fiber.
