Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve wear-resisting property and strength of valve, by making the contact area of the valve and valve seat with an iron type sintered alloy including one or more hard-phase forming elements, and selecting hardness, size and quantity of the hard phase and the overall hardness respectively within a specific range.
CONSTITUTION: Contact area of valve seat and/or valve is made of iron type sintered alloy which includes one or more hard-phase forming elements. Here, it is required that hardness of the hard phase is within the range of HV800W1800 and its quantity is 5W70% by area ratio. As the size of the hard phase, more than 70% of the entire particles constituting the hard phase have sizes of 1W150μ. It is required further that the hard phase has a void ratio of 0.5W30% and its overall hardness is HRC25W50. With such an arrangement, sufficient wear-resisting and heat-resisting property is given to the valve if it is used in a diesel engine which is operated under severe operational conditions. Further, since padding of stellite alloy or the like is not required, such a valve can be manufactured economically and with high productivity.
