Abstract

PURPOSE:To conduct annealing safely at a low cost, by, in box-annealing of ferritic or martensitic stainless steel, using nitrogen gas contg. not higher than 15% oxygen as a protective gas. CONSTITUTION:Ferritic or martensitic stainless steel material is hot rolled and is diffusion-annealed to a cold rolled sheet material for the purpose of adjusting quality. Nitrogen gas contg. 1-15% oxygen gas is used as a protective gas, and the annealing is conducted in a temp. range 650-900 deg.C. Having suitable oxidation power, the protective gas gives the steel sheet a restraining power for nitrogen absorption, inhibiting the formation of nitride, and preventing deterioration in the surface quality of the steel sheet. The use of the protective gas gives the same result as that of reducing gas, causing no explosion unlike the use of reducing gas.
