Abstract

PURPOSE: Regenerated cellulose hollow fiber membranes usable for diaphragm separation, e.g. dialysis or ultrafiltration, having improved handleability and mechanical properties, prepared from saponified and regenerated cellulose acetate hollow fibers in a specific state.
CONSTITUTION: Regenerated cellulose hollow fiber membranes having (A) a degree of cellulose crystal orientation ≥78%, (B) a dimension of crystallites ≥80Å, and (C) the ratio of wet tensile strength to elongation of 1.50W1.80, obtained by saponifying, regenerating and drying drawn hollow fibers wet spun from a cellulose acetate solution. The fiber membranes have mechanical properties, particularly Young's modulus in a wet state, twice or more the conventional fibers, and improved handleability and dimensional stability.
