Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain polyethylene terephthalate with good color tone and heat stability by a method wherein terephthalic acid and glycol is directly esterified by using a catalyst obtained by adding a Co compound and a P compound to a Ti compound and thereafter polymerized.
CONSTITUTION: When a difunctional carboxylic acid (A) based on terephthalic acid and a glycol (B) are directly esterified and thereafter polyester is produced by polycondensation, as a catalyst (C), a titanium compound (a) is used as well as a cobalt compound (b) and a phosphorus compound (c) of a formula I (wherein R1 and R3 is H, monovalent hydrocarbon group, R2 is divalent hydrocarbon group) are added so as to satisfy a formula II (wherein Ti is mole number of titanium, P is that of phosphorus, and Co is that of cobalt to one mole of acid component constituting polyester) to produce polyester.
