Abstract

PURPOSE: To attain a constant esterification degree, in the continuous esterification of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, by measuring refractive index of a condensed solution of a gas existing in the vapor phase part of a reactor and controlling the reaction conditions, esp. the feed speed of EG.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG) are continuously esterified at a constant degree of esterification. The refractive index of a solution obtained by taking out and condensing a gas existing in the vapor phase part of a reactor, is measured, and reaction conditions, particularly feed speed of EG, are controlled according to a deviation of the measured value to the target value. Preferably, slurry to TPA and EG is supplied to the first reactor, and at the same time, the residual EG is dividedly supplied to each reactor, and the feed speed of the separately added EG is controlled.
EFFECT: Since there is no time lag due to measurement and the scatter of degree of esterification is small, a vniform polymer product is obtained.
