Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare steadily a polyester having high brightness and free from yellow discoloration, in an industrial scale, by carrying out the esterification reaction in the presence of a specific reducing material, and using an Sb compound as a polymerization catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid containing 100W1000 ppm of 4-carboxybensaldehyde is directly esterified with ethylene glycol in the presence of one or more compounds selected from sulfur dioxide, a phosphine compound, phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid and a phosphite ester, (0.05×10-5-2×10-5 mole on the basis of 1 mole of terephthalic acid). Subsequently the polycondensation is carried out in the presence of an antimony compound. A polyester having improved whiteness can be prepared with suppressing the undesirable effect of color-developing material existing in terephtalic acid, while keeping the antimony compound from reduction.
