Abstract

PURPOSE: The epimerization of aldoses is effected by heating an aqueous aldose in the presence of a molybdenic acid catalyst supported on anion exchange fibers, thus producing epimerized isomers with industrial advantage because the catalyst- removing process becomes unncessary and the catalyst activity is maintained.
CONSTITUTION: An aldose as D-xylose is heated at a temperature higher than 70°C in the presence of a catalyst of (C) molybdenic acid supported on (B) anion exchange fibers, which are prepared by impregnating polyethylene fibers with vinylbenzyl chloride and divinylbenzene, polymerizing them and introducing tertiary amino groups to give the objective epimerized isomer. For example, D-xylose is continuously made to react, thus giving D-lyxose. The concentration of the aldose used is 40W80% and the anion exchange fibers preferably have less than 200 micron diameter and 3W5000 aspect ratio.
