Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce and remove the nitrogen oxides in a low temperature range efficiently by a mechanism wherein an exhaust gas which contains the nitrogen oxides is mixed with a reducing agent and thereafter is contacted with a titanium dioxide-platinum group metal catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: As a reducing catalyst of the nitrogen oxides, a catalyst which contains a titanium oxide and a platinum group metal such as platinum, palladium or the like at a concentration of about 0.1W0.5% by weight of the said titanium dioxide is used. An exhaust gas containing nitrogen oxides, especially nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides, is mixed with a reducing agent such as ammonia or the like and thereafter heated under the presence of this catalyst to about 150W350°C. Thereby, the nitrogen oxides is removed at high efficiency even if in a low temperature range and this catalyst has an excellent durability against sulfur oxides.
